River Ridge Lives Behind the Levee

River Ridge sits in unincorporated Jefferson Parish, right up against the Mississippi River batture and levee. The ground here is alluvial delta soil the river built over centuries, and many of the lots have been settled for decades. That settling, combined with a high water table, means the grade you see today often isn’t the grade the yard started with. Low spots have formed, ground has shifted, and rain that used to drain now collects. Any paver patio, driveway, or walkway out here has to be planned around that reality.

River Ridge also has something a lot of newer subdivisions don’t: big, mature trees. Those roots are great for shade and terrible for hardscape if you ignore them. Roots lift bases, crack slabs, and channel water in directions you didn’t plan for. We map them before we dig.

Grading and Drainage on Settled Ground

Because the lots have settled unevenly, the first job is re-establishing a positive grade that carries water away from your house and patio instead of toward them. We aim for roughly a quarter inch of fall per foot on surfaces, then pair that with subsurface drainage built for damp, slow-draining delta soil.

• French drains routed around root zones collect groundwater and runoff and carry it to a dry well or discharge point clear of the hardscape.
• Channel drains across driveways and pool decks grab sheet water before it reaches the garage or the house slab.
• Downspout tie-ins move roof water underground and away from the pavers instead of dumping it at the base during storms.
• Swales shaped into the lawn give surface water a defined path across a flat, settled yard toward a lower outlet.

Working Around Mature Roots

On older River Ridge lots, the trees were here first, so we design around them. We hand-dig near major roots, avoid cutting anything that would threaten a tree’s stability, and use flexible base details and permeable joints that tolerate a little root movement without cracking. Where roots have already heaved an old slab, we can excavate, regrade, and rebuild a paver surface that flexes instead of fracturing.

Base Work for Damp Delta Soil

Settled delta soil holds moisture and keeps moving, so the base is what makes a paver project last. We excavate deep, compact the subgrade in lifts, and build an angular crushed-stone base that locks together. On the dampest lots near the batture we add geotextile fabric between soil and stone so the wet subgrade can’t pump up and wash the base out.

Humidity and heavy rain, not salt, drive wear here. The Mississippi is fresh water, Lake Pontchartrain is brackish, and the Gulf is more than 40 miles off, so the real job is keeping water moving and the base dry. Our Zone 9b winters stay mild, so standing water and a soggy subgrade are the threats proper grading defends against, not freeze-thaw.
