Why we build on a paver base
A masonry island can weigh a few thousand pounds. Pour that onto a slab over our delta soil and any uneven settling cracks the slab and racks the cabinets. We build over a deep compacted base with proper edge restraint, the same way we build a patio that has to carry foot traffic and weather for decades. Because it is a paver field, water drains through the joints instead of pooling at the base of your cabinets, and if the ground ever shifts we can lift and reset the surrounding pavers without demolishing the kitchen.

- Excavate and compact a deep base sized for the load of a masonry island
- Set the paver field with slope and joints that move water away from the kitchen
- Frame the island in block or steel studs rated for the outdoors, then finish in stone, stucco, or paver veneer
- Rough in gas, water, and electrical, and flash every penetration against our heavy rain
- Cap with a sealed stone or concrete counter that shrugs off heat and humidity
