Steps and stoops carry every visitor, grocery run, and rainy-night arrival, and they sit exactly where roof runoff lands. On our soft alluvial delta soil with its high water table, a poured concrete stoop is the first thing to crack, tilt away from the door, and grow slick with mildew. We build steps and entry stoops in interlocking pavers and natural stone set on a compacted, engineered base, so every tread stays solid, level, and grippy underfoot.

Why pavers and stone beat poured concrete

A monolithic concrete stoop has no give. When the ground shifts under it, and on New Orleans ground it will, the slab cracks at the corners and pulls a gap at the threshold where water then runs back toward your foundation. Pavers and stone flex with the soil, shed water through the joints, and give a textured tread that keeps its footing in heavy rain. If a step ever settles, we lift and reset that section instead of demolishing the whole stoop.

• Build a consistent rise and run so the climb feels right and meets code
• Pitch every tread to drain away from the door and the foundation
• Lock the edges with restraints and finish the joints with polymeric sand
