The Ground That Feeds the Springs

Abita Springs sits on the Northshore in St. Tammany Parish, on sandy, well-draining ground that the town is literally named for. The water table here runs high enough to feed the natural springs the area is famous for, and that’s the quiet tension every paver project has to respect. On one hand, the sandy soil drains rainfall beautifully. On the other, the same high natural water table that supplies the springs can keep a low, wooded lot damp longer than you’d expect. A patio, driveway, or walkway here is built around both facts.

Grading for Sandy Soil and a High Water Table

Base Work for Damp, Sandy Ground

Sandy soil drains well but can shift, and a high water table keeps the subgrade moist, so the base does the work. We compact the subgrade, build an angular crushed-stone base that interlocks, and set strong edge restraint. On the dampest, lowest lots we add geotextile fabric between soil and stone so a wet subgrade can’t pump up into the base over time.
