Drainage Is the Defining Challenge in New Orleans

Most of New Orleans sits at or below sea level, and the ground under your feet is soft alluvial delta soil that the Mississippi River laid down over thousands of years. The water table is so high that you can hit moisture a couple of feet down. That’s why the whole city runs on a pumped drainage system instead of natural slope. When we build a paver patio, driveway, or walkway here, drainage and grading come first. Get them wrong and the hardscape sinks, shifts, or sits in a puddle after every storm.

New Orleans yards are flat. Really flat. There’s almost no natural fall to carry water away, so rain just sits where it lands until it soaks in or evaporates. Add a few heavy summer downpours and a low spot in the lawn becomes a pond. Our job is to give that water somewhere to go before it works its way under your pavers and undermines the base.

How We Move Water on Below-Sea-Level Ground

Because the ground won’t drain on its own, we engineer the slope and the subsurface drainage together. We set a positive grade away from your foundation, usually around a quarter inch of fall per foot, so surface water heads toward a drain instead of pooling against the house or the patio edge.

  • French drains buried along the low side of a patio catch groundwater and runoff, then carry it to a discharge point or a dry well sized for our heavy clay-free, fast-saturating soil.
  • Channel drains set flush across a driveway apron or pool deck grab sheet water before it reaches the garage or the house slab.
  • Downspout tie-ins route roof water underground and away from the hardscape instead of dumping it right at the base of your pavers.
  • Permeable paver bases with open-graded stone let rain pass straight through the joints and into a stone reservoir, which takes pressure off a strained municipal system.

Grading and Base Work That Lasts on Delta Soil

Soft delta soil settles, so the base under a paver project matters more here than almost anywhere. We excavate deeper than you’d need on firm ground, compact the subgrade in lifts, and build up an angular crushed-stone base that locks together and resists shifting. On the wettest lots we add geotextile fabric between the soil and the stone to keep the two from mixing as the ground moves and stays damp.

The high water table and constant humidity, not salt, are what wear hardscapes down in this part of Louisiana. Lake Pontchartrain is brackish and the Gulf is more than 40 miles south, so the real enemies are standing water, soggy bases, and the freeze-thaw we occasionally get in our Zone 9b winters. Proper grading keeps water moving and the base dry enough to stay stable.

Permits and Local Know-How

Hardscape and drainage work in Orleans Parish runs through the Department of Safety and Permits, and grading changes that affect how water leaves your lot can trigger review. We handle the paperwork and build to code so your project passes inspection and doesn’t push runoff onto a neighbor.

What You Get

We walk your property, find the low spots, watch where water actually goes during and after rain, and design a grading and drainage plan around your real conditions. Then we build the patio, driveway, or walkway on a base that’s ready for New Orleans ground. If your existing hardscape already holds water, we can regrade and retrofit drainage without tearing out the whole thing. Reach out and we’ll take a look at your yard.
