Drainage & Grading in Metairie

Drainage is the Metairie problem under all the others

Almost every backyard headache in Metairie traces back to water. The lots are flat, the water table is high, and our summer storms drop a lot of rain in a hurry, so water has nowhere obvious to go and ends up sitting where you don’t want it: against the foundation, in the low corner of the yard, under the patio. Standing water rots landscaping, breeds mosquitoes, undermines hardscape, and over time works against your foundation. Fix the drainage and most of the other problems ease up on their own.

Why flat Metairie yards trap water

On a sloped lot, gravity does the work. On Metairie’s dead-flat suburban lots, you have to build the slope in. Many yards out here were graded once when the subdivision went in and never since, and after years of soft fill settling unevenly, the original grade is gone. Now water pools in the dips. Add a high water table that keeps the soil saturated and slow to absorb more, and a heavy storm has nowhere to drain. The fix is deliberate: re-establish positive grade away from the house and give the water an engineered path out.

The tools we use

Every yard is different, so we match the solution to the problem. A French drain, a perforated pipe in a gravel trench wrapped in filter fabric, collects water from a chronically soggy area and carries it to a safe outlet. Channel drains catch sheet flow across a patio or driveway before it reaches the house. Area drains and catch basins pick up water in a low spot and pipe it out. Surface re-grading and swales move water across the lawn. Downspout extensions get roof water away from the foundation instead of dumping it right beside it. Often the right answer combines several of these.

Drainage and hardscape go together

This is where pavers shine. Unlike a sealed concrete slab that sheds every drop to its edges, permeable paver joints let rain soak through and reduce runoff at the source. When we build a patio, driveway, pool deck, or courtyard in Metairie, drainage is designed in from the start, slope, outlets, and permeability all planned together. If you’re already fighting water around an existing slab, switching to pavers with proper grading often solves the standing-water problem as a bonus.

Done to parish standards

Drainage work has to respect where water is allowed to go. We grade and route outlets so water leaves your property the right way without dumping onto a neighbor, and where the scope calls for it we coordinate with the Jefferson Parish Department of Inspection and Code Enforcement so the work meets parish requirements. Getting the outlet and the destination right is as important as the trench itself.
